The Institute Journey – When I “retired” in 2008 I was committed to contribute to the IT profession that had created such a rewarding 40+ year career for me. My initial contribution was to write a book called the Blind Spot: A Leader’s Guide to IT-Enabled Business Transformation.
That book was written more for non-IT leaders to comprehend and be able to constructively participate in our world. To my delight the book has become wildly popular with not just business leaders, universities, and government agencies, but, with many of you in IT leadership positions. To stay fresh and continually evolving since retiring, I’ve worked as an advisor to great companies like FedEx, Southwest Airlines and Bank of Montreal.
Since there has been so much interest in this management framework, I’ve been continually encouraged to advance this Institute as a place where IT leaders can both draw from and contribute the implementation experience of other IT leaders to continuously enrich, modify and learn from each other as we enter the second 50 years of IT.
There are maturing frameworks for both development and operations (Build, Run). However, the leadership and management frameworks are still in their infancy. Given the stakes of “Getting IT Right” and “Eliminating the Blind Spot” (read a summary of the article and register on the BCG site. The full article will be available on October 3, 2011) we’ve got to accelerate our profession and make this our leadership decade. To that end I’ve created a journey for the Institute starting with the launch of this collaborative website and evolving IT over the next few years.
